Weakness in letter-sound processing is the utmost cause of reading problems. It is the ability to identify, compare, manipulate, remember and retrieve sounds while keeping them in sequence. This skill is fundamental to the individual being able to understand the “code” of ‘written’ language and make the sound to symbol connection necessary for “decoding” words, reading. At Fullerton, kids learn to put letters together in multiple and fun ways . Teachers' strategies are also taught explicitly.
When reading comprehension problems are not due to inability to read words (decoding), the problem is often related to the ability to make sense of what is being read. And having a student re-read a paragraph repeatedly doesn’t deal with the underlying weakness. At Fullerton, students always have repeated exercises on ‘visual imagery’, practices on working memory, attention and visualization skills. Explicit instruction and practice on reading comprehension strategies are always present in the program too.
Listening is key to all communication. At Fullerton, kids are given the opportunity to talk but most importantly, they are taught to value what others are saying so they can learn to develop effective listening skills. By gaining superb listening skills, students at Fullerton develop skills in managing information accurately, forming positive relationships and honing new skills.
The writing program at Fullerton reading Center provides students with the useful way for the emerging writer to complete any written language task or assignment. The English spelling is relatively complex due to the varied roots of its language. Spelling instruction involves teaching the student about he rules that govern how words are spelled and pronounced. Fullerton students are taught spelling rules explicitly using a proven spelling book. They are also trained to demonstrate the application of the rules when reading.
Dyslexia is primarily a difficulty with reading that is entirely separated from an individual’s intellectual capacity. While there are ample symptoms related to dyslexia, at the core is often an auditory processing. The individual has difficulty segmenting the word into individual sounds to the individual letters. Fullerton uses multiple research-based reading program that will best fit the learning style of each child.
